September: The Season Warms Up
Fall in Haywood County doesn't wait for the leaves. By early September the evenings turn crisp, the summer crowds thin out, and the events calendar kicks into gear.
Thunder in the Smokies Fall Rally — September 11–13, 2026
The largest and oldest motorcycle rally in Maggie Valley returns to the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds, about 15 minutes from Mojo Manor. Expect vendors, live music, bike shows, and some of the best riding roads in America right out the front gate — the Blue Ridge Parkway, US-19 through Soco Gap, and the Dragon within day-trip range. Even if you don't ride, the people-watching (and food trucks) are worth a stop.
The Cataloochee Elk Rut — mid-September through October
This is the sleeper hit of fall in the Smokies. Bull elk bugle across Cataloochee Valley at dawn and dusk, sparring for the herd — one of the most dramatic wildlife shows east of the Rockies, and it happens about 40 minutes from the house. October: The Main Event
October is when Waynesville is at its absolute best — and when lodging sells out first. If any of these are on your list, book your dates now.
Southeastern All Truck Nationals — October 9–11, 2026
An open car and truck show at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds with parts vendors, food trucks, and a DJ all weekend (Fri–Sat 9–5, Sun 9–2). It lands square on a peak-color weekend, so you can spend the morning with show trucks and the afternoon on the Parkway.
Apple Harvest Festival — Saturday, October 17, 2026
Waynesville's signature event, named one of the best fall harvest festivals in the country. Historic Main Street closes to traffic and fills with 180+ vendors — local apples and cider, regional arts and crafts, live bluegrass and clogging, and food from one end of downtown to the other. Admission is free, it's held rain or shine on the third Saturday of October, and it's exactly 1 mile from Mojo Manor — walk down, skip the parking mess entirely.
Peak Leaf Color — roughly October 10–31 by elevation
Color starts up high (Graveyard Fields, Black Balsam) in early October and works down to downtown Waynesville by late month. We wrote a full guide with overlook-by-overlook timing: Fall Foliage in Waynesville, NC.
Where the Locals Actually Go
Between events, do what we do: grab a flight at one of the local breweries, drive the Parkway south to Waterrock Knob for sunset, and hit a waterfall or two — nine of the best are within an hour.
- Book early: October weekends in Waynesville sell out by late summer — festival weekends first.
- Layer up: 40°F mornings and 70°F afternoons are normal in October.
- Go midweek if you can: same color, half the traffic, better rates.
